A Florida Tech student wielding a knife was shot dead by Melbourne police and a school security officer on campus last night after the student reportedly wounded an officer and attacked students, police say.

The student, Alhaji Sow, 18, from Riverdale, Ga., was a sophomore studying aeronautical science.

He was killed in an encounter with Melbourne officers and Florida Tech security after they were called to the scene responding to reports of a male armed with a knife assaulting students, according to a Melbourne police news release.

Sow reportedly lunged at a police officer with the knife, to which both the police officer and Florida Tech security officer discharged their firearms at him in response. Life saving measures were taken by officers, however Sow succumbed to his injuries and died on the scene.

During the encounter, a five year veteran of the Melbourne police department sustained an injury. The extent of the injury, and the officer’s name, has yet to be disclosed.

According to the Melbourne police news release, this is an isolated incident and there are no other threats on campus.

In response to the incident, the school held  a support session today in Hartley Hall.

Student Life team members are making themselves available to offer support and resources to those who need it in the Panther Plaza. Food trucks are also being made available for foodservice.

Florida Tech president Dwayne McCay released a statement on the incident this afternoon: “My heart goes out to everyone in pain. I mourn any loss of life, while I also remain steadfastly thankful for the men and women who invest their lives in protecting us.”

Florida tech is working with law enforcement as they continue their investigation into the incident. More information will be available in the coming days.
